Description
The Autobianchi Primula Coupé was a stylish and sportier derivative of the original Primula, introduced in the mid-1960s as part of Autobianchi’s push to create a more dynamic image. While it retained the innovative front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout with a transverse engine that made the Primula a pioneer in automotive engineering, the Coupé version focused more on flair and driving enjoyment.
With sleek, fastback-inspired lines and a more aggressive stance compared to its sedan and estate siblings, the Primula Coupé appealed to younger buyers and those looking for a compact car with a touch of Italian elegance. The interior received sporty touches, and the car often featured more powerful versions of the Fiat-based inline-four engines, including 1.2 and 1.3-liter variants.
Though not a high-performance machine, the Primula Coupé delivered a spirited drive with excellent handling thanks to its front-wheel-drive configuration and independent rear suspension—a rarity at the time in this segment.
Production of the Primula Coupé ended alongside the rest of the Primula range in 1970, but its influence lingered. It showcased how clever engineering and stylish design could come together in a compact package, helping to cement Autobianchi’s reputation as a forward-thinking brand within the Fiat Group.
