Description
The Bond Equipe GT4S was a refined evolution of Bond Cars Ltd’s earlier Equipe GT 2+2, introduced in 1964 as part of the company’s effort to enhance both performance and comfort in its growing sports coupe lineup. Like its predecessor, the GT4S was based on the Triumph Herald chassis, but it benefited from several important upgrades. The most notable mechanical improvement was the adoption of the 1147cc engine from the Triumph Spitfire MkII, which delivered more power and smoother performance. The suspension was also updated, offering improved handling and ride quality, making the GT4S a more capable long-distance cruiser.
In terms of design, the Bond Equipe GT4S retained the fiberglass bodywork that defined the model line, but it featured a number of visual enhancements. The front end was restyled to include twin headlamps, giving the car a more modern and aggressive appearance. The fastback silhouette remained, contributing to its sporty character, while subtle chrome accents and improved detailing brought a more polished, upscale feel. Inside, the GT4S offered a more comfortable and better-finished interior compared to earlier models, with upgraded seating, clearer instrumentation, and options for added creature comforts, which appealed to a more discerning customer base.
One of the GT4S’s defining characteristics was its versatility. With true 2+2 seating, it maintained a level of practicality uncommon in small sports cars of the period, making it suitable for both spirited drives and everyday use. Though production numbers were relatively limited and Bond remained a niche manufacturer, the GT4S was well regarded for its clever use of Triumph components and its balance of style, performance, and practicality. Today, the Bond Equipe GT4S is considered a rare and charismatic classic, cherished by enthusiasts for its unique blend of British creativity and 1960s sports car flair.
