Description

The DAF 44 was a compact family car produced by the Dutch automaker DAF between 1966 and 1974. Designed by the renowned Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti, the DAF 44 marked a significant shift in design language and refinement for the company. It was a more modern and streamlined evolution of DAF’s earlier models and helped move the brand into a more competitive position within the European small car market.

Under the bonnet, the DAF 44 featured a 2-cylinder air-cooled engine with a capacity of 844 cc. This engine produced around 34 horsepower, giving the car slightly better performance than its predecessors. Though it remained modest in output, it was sufficient for city driving and light rural use. The car could reach a top speed of around 115 km/h (71 mph), and thanks to its lightweight construction and efficient drivetrain, it maintained good fuel economy.

One of the most distinctive features of the DAF 44 was its use of the Variomatic transmission. This unique continuously variable transmission system used belts and pulleys to deliver stepless acceleration, doing away with the need for a clutch or gear lever. The Variomatic gave the DAF 44 a smooth and relaxed driving experience and made it very easy to operate, especially for those not comfortable with manual gearboxes.

The body of the DAF 44 was more spacious and better styled than earlier DAF models. Michelotti’s design brought a cleaner, more international appearance with softer lines, a more aerodynamic shape, and improved proportions. The car was initially available as a two-door saloon but was later also offered as a three-door estate, which added versatility and appeal to families and small businesses.

Inside, the cabin was simple but practical, with seating for four adults and a straightforward dashboard layout. The materials used were basic but durable, in keeping with the car’s economical nature. There was a noticeable improvement in cabin noise levels and ride comfort compared to previous DAF cars, partly due to better sound insulation and body engineering.

The DAF 44 gained a reputation for reliability and ease of maintenance. Its mechanical simplicity made it relatively cheap to own, and the Variomatic system, while unconventional, proved robust and long-lasting. It was particularly popular in the Netherlands and also found buyers in other parts of Western Europe.

Production of the DAF 44 continued until 1974, when it was replaced by the more advanced DAF 46. While it was never a performance car, the DAF 44 played an important role in the development of DAF as a car manufacturer and helped solidify its place in the competitive market of compact European vehicles during the 1960s and 70s. Today, it remains an intriguing classic, especially valued for its distinctive transmission and stylish, Michelotti-designed body.
