DAF 55 Coupé

Description

The DAF 55 Coupé was a sportier and more stylish version of the standard DAF 55, introduced in the late 1960s as part of DAF’s efforts to appeal to a younger and more design-conscious audience. Retaining the essential mechanical layout and innovative transmission of the regular DAF 55, the Coupé added flair with a sleeker body design and subtle enhancements aimed at differentiating it from the more utilitarian saloon and estate versions.

Mechanically, the DAF 55 Coupé was identical to its siblings. It was powered by a 1.1-litre water-cooled inline-four engine developed by Renault, producing about 50 horsepower. This modest engine output was paired with DAF’s signature Variomatic continuously variable transmission, which provided smooth, stepless acceleration and did away with the need for a clutch or traditional gear changes. The car’s top speed was around 135 km/h (84 mph), making it suitable for both city driving and light highway use.

The key difference was in the car’s bodywork. The Coupé featured a lower roofline, a slightly more aggressive stance, and often came with extra chrome trim and more refined paint options. These changes, though subtle, gave it a more contemporary and sporty appearance compared to the upright and boxy saloon. The rear window design and C-pillar were also more steeply raked, contributing to a more aerodynamic silhouette.

Inside, the Coupé often received better upholstery, a padded dashboard, and upgraded trim. While it was still a small and economical car at heart, the extra touches helped elevate the sense of quality and comfort. Seating was typically for four, and the cabin retained the same logical and minimal layout as the rest of the DAF 55 range, with easy-to-read instruments and straightforward controls.

Though not a performance car, the DAF 55 Coupé handled well for its class. The light steering and compact dimensions made it nimble and easy to drive, while the Variomatic transmission contributed to a unique and smooth motoring experience. Like other DAFs, the Coupé also had the advantage of equal forward and reverse speeds due to the nature of the Variomatic system, a quirk that added to its character.

The Coupé played a role in DAF’s motorsport activities, serving as the basis for rally-prepared versions that competed in various endurance events. These competitions helped establish the reliability of the Variomatic under challenging conditions and brought attention to the company’s unconventional but effective engineering.

Production of the DAF 55 Coupé ended in 1972, along with the rest of the 55 range, as DAF transitioned to the newer 66 series. Today, the Coupé version is especially sought after by collectors due to its relative rarity and distinct design. It remains a symbol of DAF’s unique approach to car building, blending simplicity, innovation, and charm in a compact, stylish package.
