DAF 55 Station

Description

The DAF 55 Station, also known as the DAF 55 Combi, was the estate or wagon version of the DAF 55 range. Introduced alongside the saloon and coupé models, it was designed to offer additional practicality while maintaining the compact size, innovative technology, and straightforward character that defined the DAF brand during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Like its siblings, the DAF 55 Station was powered by a 1.1-litre water-cooled inline-four engine sourced from Renault. This engine produced approximately 50 horsepower and was paired with DAF’s trademark Variomatic continuously variable transmission. The combination allowed for smooth, stepless acceleration, and the system was especially well-suited to urban and suburban driving. Despite the added weight of the estate body, performance remained adequate, with a top speed around 130–135 km/h (81–84 mph).

The Station variant was designed with practicality in mind. The rear cargo area was accessible through a hatch-style tailgate, and the folding rear seats expanded the available luggage space significantly. This made the DAF 55 Station a popular choice for small families or individuals who needed extra room for shopping, luggage, or work equipment but didn’t want to move up to a larger or more expensive vehicle.

Stylistically, the DAF 55 Station carried over the clean, minimalist lines created by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti for the rest of the 55 series. While the rear of the vehicle was boxier to accommodate the cargo space, the overall look was cohesive and understated. It retained the same front-end styling as the saloon and Coupé, including the simple grille and round headlights.

Inside, the Station offered a straightforward and functional interior. It typically featured basic vinyl seats, a padded dashboard, and clear instrumentation. Some models, especially the de Luxe versions, offered improved upholstery, optional radios, or other small upgrades, but the overall focus remained on usability and reliability.

In terms of handling, the Station was as easy to drive as the rest of the range. The light steering, compact footprint, and automatic nature of the Variomatic system made it very approachable, particularly for drivers who preferred not to deal with a manual gearbox. It was also well known for its good fuel economy and simple maintenance.

The DAF 55 Station was produced until 1972, when it was succeeded by the DAF 66. Though it was never a high-volume seller outside the Netherlands and select European markets, the Station was appreciated for its clever use of space and the convenience of its CVT drivetrain.

Today, surviving examples of the DAF 55 Station are rare and often prized by collectors who value both its distinctive technology and its practical charm. It remains a testament to DAF’s unique approach to small car design and the company’s commitment to offering something different in a crowded European market.
