Description

The Daihatsu Cuore CS was a variant within the fifth generation of the Cuore lineup, introduced in the late 1980s and continuing into the early 1990s. This generation of the Cuore was known for its rounded, modern styling and continued focus on compact practicality. The CS trim represented one of the mid-range offerings in the series, balancing affordability with a slightly higher level of equipment than the most basic models.

Built on a compact platform, the Cuore CS maintained the hallmark features of the model line: small exterior dimensions, excellent maneuverability, and low fuel consumption. It was offered in three- and five-door hatchback configurations, making it versatile for both city use and light suburban commuting. Its compact footprint allowed for easy parking, while the tall body design maximized headroom and interior space.

Powering the Cuore CS was typically a small-displacement three-cylinder engine, ranging from 547 cc in domestic Japanese models to 847 cc or 847–993 cc units in export versions, depending on regional regulations. These engines were engineered for economy rather than performance, but their light weight and efficiency made the car very cost-effective to run. Most models came with a 4- or 5-speed manual gearbox, with some offering a 3-speed automatic.

Inside, the CS trim level included basic comforts such as fabric seats, a simple dashboard layout, and minimal switchgear. While it remained a budget-oriented car, the CS did offer minor upgrades over the base model, such as body-colored bumpers, hubcaps, rear wiper, and possibly a basic stereo system. The cabin was plain but functional, with controls that were easy to use and materials that were durable, if not luxurious.

The Cuore CS found favor in markets where economical, reliable transport was in high demand. It appealed especially to students, city commuters, and elderly drivers, thanks to its light steering, tight turning circle, and unobtrusive size. It was also popular in parts of Europe, Oceania, and Asia, where fuel efficiency and low maintenance costs were key considerations for car buyers.

Although the CS trim did not offer dramatic differences from the base model, it embodied the Cuore’s philosophy of delivering maximum value in a small, affordable package. Today, the Cuore CS is remembered as a practical and reliable vehicle, representative of Daihatsu’s expertise in the microcar segment and their consistent delivery of functional design with minimal excess.
