Daihatsu Midget II Cargo

Description

The Daihatsu Midget II Cargo was a quirky and compact microvan version of the Midget II, designed for light commercial use in tight urban environments. Produced during the 1990s, the Midget II was a successor to Daihatsu’s original Midget series from the postwar era, modernized with updated engineering and styling while retaining the minimalist utility of its predecessors.

The Cargo variant featured an enclosed van-style rear section, offering improved practicality over the open-bed pickup versions. This made it ideal for small-scale deliveries, courier work, or service-related businesses operating in congested city streets where larger vehicles would struggle. The vehicle maintained an ultra-compact footprint, with a narrow body and short wheelbase, making it one of the smallest enclosed vans available at the time.

Under the hood, the Midget II Cargo was powered by a 660 cc three-cylinder engine, in line with Japan’s kei car regulations. The engine was typically paired with either a 4-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic transmission. Although modest in power, the engine was efficient and well-suited for low-speed, short-distance driving. Some variants were also available with 4WD, which provided additional stability and traction, particularly beneficial in rural or hilly areas.

The exterior of the Midget II Cargo retained the charming, bug-eyed headlamp design of the regular Midget II but replaced the rear flatbed with a fully enclosed cargo box. The van body was typically steel-paneled with a rear door or hatch for loading goods. The total cargo space was limited but sufficient for small packages, tools, or light equipment.

Inside, the cabin was spartan but functional. Most models were configured with seating for one or two people, depending on the layout. The driver sat centrally in early versions, a unique arrangement that provided better visibility and maneuverability. Later models included a side-by-side two-seat layout for more conventional driving comfort.

Despite its unusual proportions and humble performance, the Daihatsu Midget II Cargo gained a following for its practicality, efficiency, and character. It appealed to businesses needing an affordable, compact delivery vehicle, as well as to enthusiasts charmed by its unconventional style.

Today, the Midget II Cargo is considered a cult classic among kei vehicle collectors. Its distinctive look and rarity outside of Japan make it a standout at car shows, and it remains a symbol of Japanese ingenuity in maximizing utility within a minimal footprint.
