Daimler 4.0

Category:

Description

The Daimler 4.0 was a luxurious executive saloon produced during the 1990s, based on the Jaguar XJ40 and later X300 platforms. It was positioned as a more refined and exclusive version of the Jaguar Sovereign 4.0, offering traditional Daimler styling cues, enhanced interior materials, and a reputation for understated elegance. Though mechanically identical to its Jaguar counterpart, the Daimler 4.0 stood apart thanks to its elevated levels of comfort and prestige.

Introduced in 1990 on the XJ40 platform, the Daimler 4.0 replaced the earlier Daimler 3.6 and retained the classic long-wheelbase layout for greater rear legroom and a smoother ride. From the outside, it featured the signature Daimler fluted grille, unique alloy wheels, discreet Daimler badging, and additional chrome accents. The styling was subtle and dignified, appealing to buyers who valued tradition and distinction over flamboyance.

Power came from Jaguar’s 4.0-litre AJ6 inline-six engine, which provided strong performance with excellent refinement. This engine was smooth, reliable, and capable of brisk acceleration, especially when paired with the four-speed automatic transmission that came as standard. In 1994, with the introduction of the X300 platform, the Daimler 4.0 gained the updated AJ16 engine—an evolution of the AJ6 with improved efficiency and smoother operation.

Inside, the Daimler 4.0 featured a richly appointed interior with top-grade Connolly leather upholstery, deep-pile carpets, and extensive use of burr walnut veneer. Standard features included automatic climate control, cruise control, electric seats, and in many cases, optional rear picnic tables and lambswool over-rugs. The long-wheelbase layout provided generous space for rear passengers, reinforcing the car’s appeal as a chauffeur-driven vehicle.

The ride quality was soft and composed, with a suspension setup tuned for comfort over sharpness. This made the Daimler 4.0 ideal for long-distance cruising, offering a quiet and serene driving experience. Though less sporty than some German rivals of the period, it was admired for its classic character and smooth handling.

Production of the Daimler 4.0 continued until 1997, when Jaguar replaced the X300 series with the X308 range. While a new V8-powered Daimler took its place, the inline-six Daimler 4.0 remains appreciated today for its graceful styling, refined performance, and connection to a long line of stately British saloons. For collectors and enthusiasts, it offers a distinctive alternative to more common executive cars of the 1990s, with a blend of heritage and luxury that’s uniquely Daimler.
