Description
The Facel Vega Excellence EX2, introduced in 1958 and produced until 1961, marked the second and most refined evolution of Facel Vega’s opulent, full-size luxury saloon. Building on the radical design and concept of the original EX1, the EX2 retained the Excellence’s dramatic character but brought key improvements in styling, engineering, and mechanical sophistication.
Visually, the EX2 was more restrained and cleaner in appearance than its predecessor. The large chrome bumpers and more flamboyant detailing of the EX1 were toned down, giving the EX2 a more elegant and contemporary presence. The tailfins were softened and better integrated into the overall design, and the grille was refined with a more modern, squared-off shape. These updates brought the car’s aesthetics closer in line with late 1950s European tastes while still keeping a strong influence from American automotive trends.
Mechanically, the EX2 was powered by the 5.9-liter (361 cubic inch) Chrysler Typhoon V8, delivering up to 360 horsepower in its most powerful form. This allowed the car to achieve a top speed of around 220–230 km/h (137–143 mph), remarkable performance for such a large and heavy luxury sedan. Depending on the buyer’s preference, the car came with either the reliable Chrysler Torqueflite three-speed automatic or the four-speed Pont-à-Mousson manual gearbox, both capable of handling the engine’s robust torque.
One of the most distinctive features remained the rear-hinged “suicide” doors and the absence of a B-pillar, creating an uninterrupted opening when all doors were open. This design was highly unusual for a four-door car and lent the EX2 a dramatic flair and grand entrance experience that few cars could rival.
The interior of the EX2 was updated to match its more refined exterior. The dashboard continued to mimic the look of turned aluminum, painted with great skill, and featured a full suite of Jaeger instruments and aviation-style switches. The materials throughout the cabin were first-class, including fine leather, polished wood, and deep carpeting. Passenger comfort was paramount, with generous rear legroom and the feel of a high-end French drawing room on wheels.
Facel Vega produced only about 99 examples of the EX2, making it even rarer than the EX1. Each car was effectively hand-built to order, and many were delivered to royalty, celebrities, and business elites who wanted a car that stood apart from traditional European limousines and American land yachts.
Today, the Facel Vega Excellence EX2 is considered one of the most exotic and exclusive postwar luxury cars. Its blend of transatlantic styling, powerful American V8 performance, and French craftsmanship represents a unique and bold vision of what a prestige car could be. Its rarity and daring concept have made it a highly sought-after collectible, particularly among those who appreciate design that breaks the mold.
