Description

The Facel Vega Facel 6 Coupé was the last in a series of compact grand touring cars produced by the French luxury marque before its closure in 1964. Intended as a refined and more powerful successor to the Facel III, the Facel 6 combined French styling with British mechanical reliability. It was a bold final effort to rescue the company’s reputation following earlier engine troubles with the Facellia and an increasingly competitive European sports car market.

Design-wise, the Facel 6 Coupé retained the elegant and modern silhouette of the Facel III. It featured clean, crisp body lines, subtle chrome trim, and a gently sloping roofline that flowed smoothly into the tail. The front end was understated yet stylish, with a simple grille and dual headlamps set into modestly flared fenders. It was a compact two-door coupé, but its proportions gave it a sophisticated, upscale appearance more in line with larger grand tourers.

The interior followed Facel Vega’s tradition of aircraft-inspired dashboards and luxurious detailing. A full array of round Jaeger gauges spread across a metal-finished fascia, with toggle switches and quality materials throughout the cabin. The upholstery was trimmed in fine leather, and the seats were designed for comfort and support, making the car suitable for long-distance touring despite its relatively small size.

Mechanically, the major change from the Facel III to the Facel 6 was the switch to the 2.8-liter inline-six engine sourced from the Austin-Healey 3000. This engine produced around 150 horsepower and significantly improved the car’s performance and drivability. The engine was paired with a four-speed manual transmission, often with overdrive, offering smooth and strong acceleration. With a top speed of around 180 km/h (112 mph), the Facel 6 Coupé provided the kind of performance the earlier Facellia had aspired to but never achieved reliably.

Despite these technical and design improvements, the Facel 6 Coupé was introduced during Facel Vega’s final, financially unstable period. The company’s reputation had been damaged by earlier reliability issues, and the market was increasingly competitive. As a result, only a very limited number of Facel 6 cars were produced—fewer than 45 in total—making the coupé one of the rarest Facel Vegas ever built.

Today, the Facel Vega Facel 6 Coupé is a little-known but highly collectible piece of automotive history. Its rarity, elegant styling, and blend of French luxury with proven British engineering make it a distinctive and desirable car among enthusiasts of postwar European GTs. It stands as a graceful end to Facel Vega’s ambitious journey in the world of high-performance luxury automobiles.
