Description
The Facel Vega Facel III Coupé debuted in 1963 as a refined and much-improved successor to the earlier Facellia models. It was introduced during the final years of the French automaker’s existence, representing a last effort to produce a reliable and stylish small grand tourer that could compete with established European marques like Alfa Romeo and Triumph.
The styling of the Facel III Coupé was clean and sophisticated, continuing the brand’s established design language. It retained the sharp lines, minimal chrome detailing, and upright grille that had come to define Facel Vega’s smaller cars. The coupé body was compact yet well-proportioned, with a slightly more formal look than the cabriolet version. It featured a low roofline, wraparound rear window, and subtly flared wheel arches, giving the car an elegant but sporting character.
Inside the cabin, the Facel III continued the marque’s tradition of delivering luxury in a compact form. The dashboard was fitted with a full set of Jaeger instruments, aircraft-style toggle switches, and a brushed aluminum or woodgrain finish. High-quality leather, fine detailing, and thoughtful ergonomics created an upscale driving environment that was far above what was typical for similarly sized sports cars of the time.
The greatest improvement in the Facel III came from its powertrain. Unlike the Facellia, which had been plagued by reliability issues due to Facel’s own engine design, the Facel III was fitted with a Volvo-sourced 1.8-liter inline-four engine. Producing approximately 108 horsepower, this engine delivered strong and dependable performance, paired with a four-speed manual transmission (often with optional overdrive). The car was capable of reaching top speeds in the range of 170–180 km/h (105–112 mph), making it well-suited for long-distance touring.
Despite these improvements, the Facel III arrived too late to reverse the fortunes of the struggling company. Just over 600 examples—both coupé and cabriolet—were built before production ceased in 1964. The economic challenges and prior damage to the brand’s reputation contributed to Facel Vega’s collapse shortly afterward.
Today, the Facel III Coupé is regarded as one of the most desirable small French GTs of the era. Its tasteful styling, luxurious interior, and dependable Swedish mechanicals make it a distinctive alternative to more common classics. For collectors and enthusiasts of rare European cars, the Facel III Coupé represents both the peak and the swan song of Facel Vega’s compact sports car ambitions.
