Ferrari 308 GTS

Description

The Ferrari 308 GTS, introduced at the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show, was the open-topped counterpart to the popular 308 GTB and quickly became one of Ferrari’s most recognizable and successful models of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its targa-style removable roof panel provided the thrill of open-air motoring while retaining the sleek profile and mid-engined balance of the berlinetta, making it an appealing choice for buyers who wanted both style and versatility.

Mechanically, the 308 GTS was nearly identical to the 308 GTB of the period. Power came from the 2,926 cc 90-degree V8 with four twin-choke Weber carburetors, producing around 240 horsepower in European specification (U.S. models were detuned for emissions regulations). Mated to Ferrari’s signature gated five-speed manual gearbox, the engine delivered smooth, flexible performance with a top speed of around 250 km/h. The fully independent suspension, ventilated disc brakes, and mid-engine layout gave the GTS excellent handling and balance, characteristics that made it equally enjoyable on twisting roads or long highway drives.

The most noticeable design difference from the GTB was the integration of the removable black-finished targa roof, which could be stowed behind the seats. The GTS also adopted louvered rear quarter panels, similar to those on the Ferrari 512 BB, which distinguished it from the GTB’s smooth sail panels. Pininfarina’s timeless wedge-shaped body design, complete with pop-up headlights and classic five-spoke alloy wheels, remained intact and contributed to the car’s enduring appeal.

Inside, the GTS offered a driver-focused cockpit with low-slung leather seats, a clear instrument cluster, and the iconic open-gated shifter. While comfort levels were modest compared to luxury grand tourers, the cabin exuded Ferrari character and was built to engage the driver. Air conditioning, electric windows, and stereo systems were available, making the GTS suitable for everyday touring as well as spirited weekend drives.

The 308 GTS remained in production until 1980, when it was replaced by the fuel-injected 308 GTSi. Over its run, it became a cultural icon, partly due to its starring role in the television series Magnum, P.I., where a red example driven by Tom Selleck helped cement the model’s place in popular culture.

Today, the carbureted 308 GTS is particularly prized among enthusiasts for its sharper throttle response, lighter weight compared to later models, and the purity of its original Pininfarina design. It represents an era when Ferrari’s V8 sports cars combined mechanical simplicity, distinctive style, and everyday usability in a way that few modern cars can match.
