Description

The Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole, unveiled in 1982, was the targa-roof successor to the 308 GTSi and represented the most developed form of the original 308 design. The major change lay in the introduction of a four-valve-per-cylinder head — the “Quattrovalvole” designation — which improved engine breathing and efficiency, restoring much of the performance lost when Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection replaced carburetors in 1980.

Its 2,926 cc 90-degree V8 retained fuel injection but now produced around 240 horsepower in European specification and approximately 230 horsepower in U.S. trim. Mated to Ferrari’s signature five-speed manual gearbox with the open-gated shifter, the engine delivered brisk acceleration, with 0 to 100 km/h achieved in about 6.5 seconds and a top speed approaching 250 km/h. The car kept the proven mid-engine layout, fully independent suspension, and ventilated disc brakes, ensuring the agile handling and balanced dynamics that had made the 308 series so engaging.

Externally, the GTS QV preserved Pininfarina’s iconic wedge profile and pop-up headlights but introduced subtle styling revisions. These included a black louvered panel between the headlamps, body-colored front and rear spoilers, and Quattrovalvole badging. The removable targa roof panel, finished in black, remained the car’s signature feature, offering the open-air appeal of a convertible with the rigidity and proportions of a coupe. U.S.-spec cars carried larger impact bumpers, side marker lights, and a higher ride height, while European models retained the slimmer, more integrated appearance.

The interior followed the familiar Ferrari V8 theme, with low-slung leather seats, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a clear, functional instrument layout. The targa design made it especially suited to sunny weather touring, and while amenities were limited compared to grand tourers, the car’s appeal lay in its mechanical engagement and open-air experience rather than luxury.

Produced until 1985, the 308 GTS QV closed out the 308’s production run before the arrival of the 328 GTS. Today it is regarded as the most refined and usable version of the 308 GTS lineage, blending classic Ferrari styling, improved reliability, and performance that remains lively by modern standards. It is particularly sought after by enthusiasts who want the charm of the original design combined with the benefits of the final technical evolution.
