Description
The Ferrari 308 GTS USA was the North American market version of the 308 GTS, produced from 1977 to 1980, and adapted to meet the strict emissions and safety regulations in place at the time. While it retained the core character and styling of the European model, a number of mechanical and visual changes distinguished the USA specification cars, most notably reduced engine output and modifications to comply with federal standards.
Power came from the same 2,926 cc 90-degree V8 as in the European GTS, but U.S. emissions controls — including a lower compression ratio, retuned ignition, air-injection system, and catalytic converters — reduced output from around 240 horsepower to approximately 205 horsepower. Despite the drop in performance, the 308 GTS USA still offered engaging driving dynamics, with its mid-engined layout, fully independent suspension, and ventilated disc brakes maintaining the responsive handling expected of a Ferrari. The five-speed manual gearbox with the gated shifter remained a defining feature, contributing to the car’s tactile and mechanical feel.
Visually, U.S. models could be identified by their larger front and rear impact bumpers, which protruded further from the body to meet federal crash requirements. These bumpers were usually finished in black rubber and gave the car a slightly bulkier look compared to the slimmer European versions. U.S. cars also featured rectangular side marker lights on the front and rear fenders, sealed-beam headlights instead of European-spec units, and slightly higher ride height to comply with bumper height laws.
The interior was essentially the same as the European model, with leather-trimmed sports seats, a compact three-spoke steering wheel, and a functional dashboard layout. Standard equipment in the U.S. cars often included air conditioning, electric windows, and a stereo system, making them comfortable for long-distance touring as well as spirited drives. The removable black-finished targa roof panel remained the signature feature, providing open-air driving without sacrificing the rigidity of the coupe body.
While the reduced power made the 308 GTS USA slower in outright performance compared to its European counterpart, it was still capable of a top speed in the region of 220 km/h and delivered an engaging driving experience. Many owners in later years have reversed some of the emissions modifications to restore European-level performance.
Today, the 308 GTS USA is appreciated for its role in introducing a wide American audience to Ferrari ownership, thanks in part to its starring role in Magnum, P.I.. Despite the regulatory compromises, it retains the timeless Pininfarina styling and the mid-engined V8 character that made the 308 series one of Ferrari’s most beloved models.
