Description

The Ferrari 456M GT was an updated and refined version of the original Ferrari 456 GT, introduced in 1998 and produced until 2003. The “M” in its name stood for Modificata, reflecting a series of styling, mechanical, and comfort improvements that elevated the car into a more modern and luxurious grand tourer, while retaining the character of a traditional Ferrari V12.

At its core, the 456M GT was powered by the same 5.5-liter front-mounted V12 engine as its predecessor, producing around 442 horsepower. This engine was paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox in the GT, offering purist appeal with strong performance and precise control. With a top speed just over 300 km/h and a 0–100 km/h time of under 5.5 seconds, it remained one of the fastest four-seat cars in the world, a hallmark of Ferrari’s ability to blend performance with practicality.

The most noticeable updates were in styling and interior comfort. Pininfarina softened and modernized the car’s lines, smoothing the front fascia with a new grille, removing the retractable headlights in favor of fixed lenses, and reshaping details around the bumpers and rear. These subtle changes gave the 456M a cleaner, more contemporary look while preserving the understated elegance that defined the model. Inside, the cabin benefited from redesigned seats, a revised dashboard, and improved ergonomics. Luxurious Connolly leather upholstery was standard, and new technology such as an upgraded climate-control system and better sound insulation made the car more comfortable for long-distance journeys.

Mechanically, Ferrari made refinements to the suspension and aerodynamics to improve handling and ride quality. The electronically controlled damping system was updated for smoother transitions between comfort and sport settings, while improved aerodynamics increased stability at high speeds. Together, these enhancements made the 456M GT a more refined and usable car without diluting its performance credentials.

Today, the Ferrari 456M GT is regarded as a modern classic, appreciated for its combination of traditional front-engined V12 Ferrari character and everyday usability. Its understated styling, spacious 2+2 layout, and manual gearbox make it highly desirable among collectors who value both performance and refinement. As one of the last Ferrari grand tourers with a naturally aspirated V12 up front and a manual transmission, it represents a significant moment in Ferrari’s history, balancing power, elegance, and luxury in equal measure.
