Description

The Ferrari F355 GTS was introduced in 1995 as the targa-roof variant of the F355 lineup, combining the sleek styling and performance of the Berlinetta coupe with the open-air experience of the Spider. The “GTS” designation stood for “Gran Turismo Spider,” reflecting its removable roof panel that could be stored behind the seats, allowing drivers to switch between enclosed and semi-open driving.

Like its siblings, the F355 GTS was powered by a 3,495 cc 90-degree V8 with five valves per cylinder — a first for Ferrari road cars. Producing 380 horsepower at 8,250 rpm, the engine delivered thrilling performance with a 0 to 100 km/h time of around 4.7 seconds and a top speed close to 295 km/h. Bosch Motronic engine management, titanium connecting rods, and the ability to rev well past 8,000 rpm made it a highly engaging powerplant, with a distinctive exhaust note that became one of Ferrari’s most celebrated.

Pininfarina’s design for the F355 GTS closely mirrored the Berlinetta, with its smooth aerodynamic lines, pop-up headlights, and sculpted side intakes, but incorporated a carefully engineered targa roof system. The roof’s fitment maintained the car’s structural rigidity while allowing for quick removal, giving the car flexibility for both touring and spirited drives. The aerodynamic efficiency was aided by a flat underbody and functional rear diffuser, technology drawn from Ferrari’s Formula One expertise.

The interior carried over the Berlinetta’s driver-focused design, trimmed in high-quality leather and offering improved ergonomics over the 348 GTS it replaced. Buyers could opt for the classic six-speed gated manual gearbox or, from 1997 onward, Ferrari’s pioneering F1 electrohydraulic paddle-shift transmission, marking the model as part of a new technological era.

The F355 GTS offered a balance between the Berlinetta’s chassis rigidity and the Spider’s open-top appeal, making it one of the most versatile and desirable variants in the range. Produced until 1999, it remains a sought-after model among enthusiasts for its blend of performance, beauty, and the option to enjoy Ferrari’s high-revving V8 soundtrack in the open air.
