Ferrari Mondial 3.2

Category:

Description

The Ferrari Mondial 3.2 was introduced in 1985 as the third evolution of Ferrari’s mid-engined 2+2 model, replacing the Mondial Quattrovalvole. While it retained the overall design and concept of its predecessors, the 3.2 brought significant improvements in performance, refinement, and build quality, addressing many of the criticisms leveled at earlier Mondials.

The most important upgrade lay in the engine. The 3.2-liter (3,185 cc) V8, shared with the contemporary Ferrari 328, featured four valves per cylinder, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, and Marelli Microplex electronic ignition. Power output was around 270 horsepower in European specification and about 260 horsepower in U.S. models, a healthy increase over the Quattrovalvole. This brought 0 to 100 km/h times down to around 6.8 seconds and raised the top speed to approximately 250 km/h, giving the Mondial performance much more in line with Ferrari expectations.

Pininfarina’s styling remained largely unchanged, but subtle refinements modernized the look. The front and rear bumpers were now body-colored, giving the car a more integrated appearance, and the front grille was revised. The interior received improved materials, better ergonomics, and updated switchgear, making it more comfortable and user-friendly. The low driving position, clear instrumentation, and open-gated shifter continued to provide a traditional Ferrari feel.

The Mondial 3.2 was available in both coupe and cabriolet (Spider) forms, with the convertible proving especially popular in markets like North America. Both body styles benefited from the Mondial’s relatively spacious cabin and 2+2 seating layout, making it one of the most practical Ferraris of its time. The mid-engine layout and long wheelbase provided stable, predictable handling, while the fully independent suspension and ventilated disc brakes ensured capable performance on twisty roads or high-speed cruising.

Production of the Mondial 3.2 ran until 1989, when it was succeeded by the Mondial T. In total, approximately 987 coupes and 810 cabriolets were built, making it one of the more common Mondial variants, though still relatively rare by general sports car standards.

Today, the Mondial 3.2 is often seen as the sweet spot in the Mondial range, combining the improved power and reliability of the later cars with the cleaner, more classic 1980s Ferrari styling. It offers a unique blend of practicality, open-top or closed-body choice, and genuine Ferrari driving engagement, making it a compelling option for those seeking a usable classic from Maranello.
