Description
The Ferrari Mondial QV Spider was introduced in 1983 as part of the updated Mondial Quattrovalvole range, marking the first time Ferrari offered an open-top version of its mid-engined 2+2 V8 model. This was also historically significant for Ferrari, as the Mondial QV Spider became the company’s first production convertible with a mid-mounted engine, combining the practicality of the Mondial with the appeal of open-air driving.
The “QV” designation stood for “Quattrovalvole,” meaning four valves per cylinder. The Mondial QV’s 2,926 cc V8 featured this new 32-valve head design, improving airflow and combustion efficiency compared to the earlier Mondial 8. With Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, the engine produced around 240 horsepower in European specification and about 230 horsepower for U.S. models. Performance improved over the Mondial 8, with a top speed of approximately 240 km/h and a 0 to 100 km/h time in the low seven-second range. Power was sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox with Ferrari’s iconic open-gated shifter.
Pininfarina’s styling for the Spider variant closely followed that of the Mondial QV Coupe, with the same long wheelbase, sharp nose, and clean wedge-shaped profile, but featured a manually operated folding soft top. When lowered, the roof stowed neatly under a tonneau cover, allowing for an uninterrupted view of the car’s lines. The open-top configuration enhanced the driving experience, giving occupants an unobstructed soundtrack from the mid-mounted V8.
Inside, the Mondial QV Spider offered seating for four, with the rear seats still best suited for short trips or small passengers. The cabin was trimmed in leather, and ergonomics were improved compared to earlier Ferrari 2+2 models, with better switchgear placement and clearer instrumentation. The combination of an open-air cockpit and the Ferrari V8’s soundtrack made the Spider particularly appealing for relaxed touring.
Production of the Mondial QV Spider ran from 1983 until 1985, after which it was replaced by the Mondial 3.2 Spider. Its introduction broadened Ferrari’s market reach, attracting buyers who wanted the brand’s performance and style in a more versatile and lifestyle-oriented package.
Today, the Mondial QV Spider is appreciated for its unique place in Ferrari history as the first mid-engined convertible from Maranello, as well as for offering a balance of classic 1980s Ferrari design, open-top enjoyment, and everyday usability.
