The Ford Model A Coupé was one of the most stylish and widely appreciated body styles of the Model A, produced between 1928 and 1931. It was aimed at buyers who wanted something smaller and sportier than a sedan, while still retaining the comfort and practicality of a closed car. The Coupé became especially popular among young professionals and couples, offering a balance of refinement, economy, and style.

The body design of the Coupé was compact and elegant, with two doors, a fixed roof, and seating for two passengers inside. Many versions included a rumble seat at the rear, which flipped open to provide space for one or two additional passengers. This feature added to its charm and made it more versatile than other small-bodied cars. The Coupé’s proportions, with its upright roofline, flowing fenders, and classic radiator grille, made it one of the most recognizable silhouettes of the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Inside, the Coupé was more comfortable than the open Roadster but less formal than the larger sedans. Upholstery ranged from simple cloth in the standard versions to mohair and better trim in the Deluxe models. The compact cabin gave it a cozy atmosphere, appealing to drivers who valued style and intimacy over sheer passenger space.

Mechanically, the Coupé shared the same underpinnings as the rest of the Model A lineup. It was powered by the 201 cubic inch (3.3-liter) inline four-cylinder engine producing 40 horsepower, paired with a three-speed manual transmission. Capable of reaching 55 mph, the Coupé was reliable, efficient, and far more modern than the outgoing Model T. It also benefitted from mechanical brakes on all four wheels and a stronger chassis, giving it both safety and durability.

The Coupé was priced affordably, making it accessible to a wide audience. It cost slightly more than the basic Roadster but less than the Tudor and Fordor sedans, striking a balance between economy and style. Its combination of practicality and fashionable looks made it a strong seller throughout the Model A’s production run.

Today, the Ford Model A Coupé is one of the most sought-after body styles among collectors and restorers. Its compact size, classic looks, and variety of configurations—including Standard, Business, Sport, and Deluxe versions—give it enduring appeal. It also has a special place in hot rod culture, as many Coupés were modified and raced in the postwar era. Whether restored to original condition or customized, the Model A Coupé remains a timeless symbol of the late 1920s automobile and a cornerstone of Ford’s legacy.
