The Ford Model AC Runabout was introduced in 1904 and represented one of the earliest developments in the history of the Ford Motor Company. It was essentially an upgraded version of the Ford Model A, the company’s first production car, which had been launched in 1903. While the Model A had established Ford as a new player in the American automobile industry, the Model AC gave customers more performance through a larger, more powerful engine while retaining the same compact runabout design.

Mechanically, the Model AC was equipped with a two-cylinder engine enlarged to 10 horsepower, compared to the 8-horsepower unit in the standard Model A. This modest increase gave the car a bit more speed and pulling power, making it more versatile for buyers who wanted a stronger yet affordable motorcar. The engine was mounted under the seat, as was common in early automobiles, and power was delivered to the rear wheels through a chain drive.

The chassis and bodywork were nearly identical to the Model A. The Model AC was a small, lightweight runabout with a simple open two-seat configuration. Its tiller steering, buggy-like stance, and wooden-spoked wheels reflected its transitional nature between horse-drawn carriages and fully developed motorcars. Priced at around $900, it was positioned as a practical yet modern alternative to traditional transport, accessible to early adopters who wanted the novelty of owning an automobile.

Production numbers for the Model AC were very limited. Estimates suggest that only a few hundred were built in 1904 before Ford shifted its focus to subsequent models such as the Model C and the more refined Model F. This short production run makes the Model AC one of the rarer early Fords, and surviving examples are highly sought after by collectors of veteran automobiles.

Today, the Ford Model AC Runabout is remembered as a small but important step in Ford’s early years. It showed how quickly the company sought to improve its designs, offering more power and utility without abandoning the simplicity that made its first cars appealing. Though it was soon overshadowed by later models, the Model AC holds historical significance as part of the foundation upon which Ford built its future as one of the world’s largest and most influential car manufacturers.
