Description

The Glas 1304 CL was the more refined and better-equipped version of the Glas 1304, produced in the mid-1960s as part of Glas’s ambitious effort to expand its “04” series. Building on the success of the innovative Glas 1004, the 1304 introduced a larger engine and improved performance, while the CL trim level offered additional comfort, style, and prestige. For buyers in the compact car market, the 1304 CL presented a sophisticated alternative to mainstream rivals such as the Volkswagen Beetle and Opel Kadett, with Glas’s trademark engineering innovation setting it apart.

From the outside, the 1304 CL looked much like the standard 1304, but with subtle details that gave it a more upscale presence. Available as a two-door saloon, coupé, cabriolet, or estate (Kombi), it featured neat, upright proportions, a simple grille flanked by round headlights, and carefully applied chrome trim. The lines were clean and modern, reflecting the design trends of the early 1960s, but the CL’s extra touches—such as improved exterior finishes and additional chrome highlights—signaled that it was the premium model in the lineup.

Inside, the CL trim set itself apart with a more comfortable and better-appointed cabin. Upholstery materials were upgraded, often with higher-quality fabrics or vinyl, while the dashboard offered a more comprehensive set of instruments compared to the base model. The improvements were subtle rather than extravagant, but they made the car feel more polished and suitable for buyers who wanted a step up from purely functional motoring. Seating for four was standard, with reasonable comfort given the compact size, and the cabriolet version added an extra touch of flair with its folding roof.

Mechanically, the Glas 1304 CL was powered by the same advanced 1,290 cc four-cylinder engine as the regular 1304, featuring the pioneering overhead camshaft driven by a toothed rubber timing belt—a Glas innovation that would later become an industry standard. In CL form, the engine produced around 60 horsepower, with sportier versions offering more. This gave the car a top speed of around 140–150 km/h (87–93 mph), making it competitive with many rivals in its class. Power was transmitted through a four-speed manual gearbox, and thanks to its light construction, the 1304 CL was both agile and efficient, offering an enjoyable driving experience.

On the road, the 1304 CL combined lively performance with Glas’s trademark smooth engine operation. Its compact size made it easy to handle in urban settings, while its OHC engine allowed it to cruise confidently on open roads. The CL trim made it more appealing to families and professionals looking for practicality without sacrificing comfort or a touch of prestige.

Production of the Glas 1304 CL lasted until 1967, when BMW acquired Hans Glas GmbH. The takeover marked the end of Glas as an independent carmaker, but the 1304 and its variants highlighted the company’s creativity and technical ingenuity.

Today, the Glas 1304 CL is a rare and collectible car, appreciated by enthusiasts for its combination of understated style, pioneering engineering, and historical significance. It stands as a symbol of Glas’s determination to compete in the competitive 1960s compact car market and as one of the last independent efforts before the company was absorbed into BMW.
