Description

The Mazda Eunos Cosmo 20B was the ultimate expression of Mazda’s rotary-engine programme and one of the most technically advanced luxury coupés ever built in Japan. Produced from 1990 to 1996 and sold exclusively through Mazda’s premium Eunos dealer network, the 20B-powered Cosmo represented the pinnacle of Mazda’s early-1990s ambition — a futuristic grand tourer combining bold styling, lavish equipment and the world’s first production triple-rotor engine. Even today, the 20B Cosmo stands apart as a rare, sophisticated and technologically singular machine.

At its heart was the legendary 20B-REW, a 1962 cc triple-rotor rotary engine equipped with sequential twin turbochargers. Officially limited to 280 horsepower under Japan’s period gentleman’s agreement, the engine’s true capability was far greater, and contemporary testers noted acceleration and mid-range thrust comparable to far larger six- and eight-cylinder rivals. The 20B delivered the smoothest and most turbine-like power delivery of any rotary engine Mazda ever produced, free from vibration and eager to rev. Thanks to sequential turbocharging, torque arrived early and flowed seamlessly across the rev range, giving the Cosmo an effortless, elastic surge of power at any speed. A four-speed automatic transmission was standard, tuned to provide the quiet, unobtrusive shifts expected of a luxury GT.

The chassis and suspension were designed for refined long-distance comfort. Mazda used fully independent suspension, with MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear, carefully tuned to give the Cosmo a composed, supple ride. Although the car was large and heavy, the even weight distribution afforded by the compact rotary engine helped maintain stability. The Cosmo excelled at high-speed cruising, where the engine’s quiet smoothness, the car’s hushed cabin and its sophisticated suspension created a calm, unhurried driving experience. Traction control and advanced ABS systems provided a level of safety and stability unusual for the early 1990s.

Styling was one of the 20B Cosmo’s most distinctive qualities. Mazda gave the car a flowing, futuristic shape defined by smooth, uninterrupted curves, a long bonnet, gently rounded shoulders and an elegant fastback profile. Pop-up headlamps completed the sleek, aerodynamic look. The Cosmo avoided aggressive styling cues in favour of a pure, sculptural form that projected luxury through simplicity. Its design has aged exceptionally well and remains one of Mazda’s most graceful rotary shapes.

The interior was equally ambitious. The Eunos Cosmo was the first production car in the world with a touchscreen interface — Mazda’s “Car Communication System.” This unit controlled navigation, climate, entertainment, trip functions and, in some versions, a television tuner. The cabin was wide, refined and trimmed with high-quality materials, including soft-touch plastics, velour or leather upholstery and tasteful wood-tone accents. The seats were deeply cushioned and electrically adjustable, designed for relaxed grand-touring comfort. Sound insulation was extensive, giving the 20B Cosmo a quiet, almost serene cabin atmosphere even at speed.

On the road, the 20B Cosmo delivered a driving experience unlike any other car of its era. Acceleration was smooth, strong and uninterrupted by vibration. The sequential turbos provided immediate low-end response followed by a powerful mid-range surge. The suspension absorbed rough surfaces gracefully, and the car maintained a stable, confident stance during high-speed cruising. While not a sports car in the vein of the RX-7, it offered refined, confident handling that suited its grand-touring purpose. The Cosmo felt engineered for long, fast journeys rather than aggressive cornering.

The Eunos Cosmo 20B was designed as a showcase of Mazda’s technological prowess rather than as a high-volume sales model. Its complexity and high cost made it exclusive even when new, and its domestic-market-only status ensured it remained a rare sight outside Japan.

Today, the 20B-powered Cosmo is one of the most collectible rotary cars Mazda ever built. Enthusiasts value it for its uniqueness, its sophisticated engineering and its unmatched smoothness. The 20B remains the only production triple-rotor engine ever sold in a road car, and the Cosmo surrounding it is a beautifully designed, luxurious and historically significant grand tourer. As the ultimate rotary-powered luxury coupé, the Eunos Cosmo 20B stands as one of Mazda’s most remarkable achievements.
