Steering was accurate but relatively heavy at low speeds, and the suspension absorbed road imperfections effectively. The car was not intended to be sporty, but rather to provide dependable and comfortable transport over long distances.
By 1975, the 230 was popular with professionals, families and fleet operators who wanted a petrol alternative to the increasingly dominant diesel models. Its balance of reasonable performance, comfort and reliability made it a versatile everyday car, and many examples accumulated high mileages with routine maintenance.
