Description

The Mercedes-Benz 230/4 was a distinctive and relatively short-lived model within the W110 “Fintail” series, introduced in 1965 as a final evolution of Mercedes-Benz’s four-cylinder mid-size saloons. The “/4” designation identified the car as the four-cylinder version, distinguishing it from the six-cylinder 230 models that appeared later in the W114 range. The 230/4 was conceived as a more powerful alternative to the 200, offering improved performance while retaining the conservative engineering and durability that defined Mercedes-Benz in the mid-1960s.

Power came from a 2.3-litre inline four-cylinder petrol engine, producing approximately 105 horsepower. This was a significant increase over the 2.0-litre engine used in the 200 and gave the 230/4 noticeably stronger acceleration and improved cruising ability. The engine remained tuned for smoothness and longevity rather than sportiness, delivering flexible power suitable for long-distance driving. A four-speed manual gearbox was standard, with an automatic transmission available, making the car particularly appealing to buyers seeking comfort and ease of use.

The chassis was based on the proven W110 unitary body construction. Suspension featured double wishbones and coil springs at the front and Mercedes-Benz’s improved low-pivot swing axle with coil springs at the rear. This rear suspension design was a key safety advancement, significantly reducing the handling issues associated with earlier swing-axle layouts. Front disc brakes and rear drum brakes provided reliable and predictable braking performance, appropriate to the car’s increased power and weight.

Styling of the Mercedes-Benz 230/4 followed the restrained fintail design language of the W110 series. By this stage, the tailfins were subtle and functional rather than decorative, aiding rear visibility while maintaining a dignified profile. Clean body lines, an upright grille and restrained chrome detailing gave the car a professional and conservative appearance, consistent with Mercedes-Benz’s brand identity of the era.

Inside, the 230/4 offered a spacious and well-constructed cabin. Seating was upright and supportive, designed for long journeys, and interior materials were chosen for durability rather than luxury. The dashboard was simple and logically arranged, with clear instrumentation and excellent visibility. Compared with the 200, the 230/4 felt more capable and relaxed at higher speeds, making it better suited to motorway and autobahn use.

On the road, the Mercedes-Benz 230/4 delivered a calm but noticeably more confident driving experience than its smaller-engined sibling. The additional power allowed for easier overtaking and more relaxed cruising, while the refined suspension ensured stable handling and good ride comfort. Steering was accurate though relatively heavy at low speeds, and the car rewarded smooth, unhurried driving in keeping with Mercedes-Benz’s traditional philosophy.

The 230/4 occupied a transitional position in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. It was introduced shortly before the company launched the all-new W114/W115 series, which featured more modern styling and chassis design. As a result, the 230/4 had a relatively short production life, making it less common than both the 200 and the later W114 six-cylinder models.

Today, the Mercedes-Benz 230/4 is appreciated as an interesting and important bridge between two generations of Mercedes-Benz saloons. It represents the final and most powerful expression of the four-cylinder fintail concept, combining traditional styling with improved performance and safety. Surviving examples are valued for their mechanical robustness, understated design and historical significance as one of the last refinements of the W110 series.
