Messerschmitt KR 200 Cabriolet Luxus

Description

The Messerschmitt KR 200 Cabriolet Luxus was a more generously equipped version of the KR 200 Cabriolet, offering small refinements and upgraded trim within the same compact, three-wheeled microcar format. Produced during the late 1950s and early 1960s, it reflected Messerschmitt’s attempt to broaden the appeal of the Kabinenroller concept by adding a touch of comfort and presentation to an already distinctive design.

Like all KR 200 variants, the Cabriolet Luxus was developed in post-war West Germany at a time when affordable personal transport was essential. The car retained the narrow body and tandem seating layout that defined the KR 200 series. Driver and passenger sat one behind the other, keeping the overall width extremely compact while allowing the car to remain lightweight and efficient.

The Cabriolet body style replaced the famous bubble canopy of earlier models with a fixed windscreen and folding fabric roof. This configuration made entry and exit more conventional and improved ventilation in warm weather. The “Luxus” designation indicated enhanced trim and equipment, which could include improved upholstery, additional interior detailing and small exterior embellishments that distinguished it from standard versions.

Power was provided by a rear-mounted single-cylinder, two-stroke engine of approximately 191 cc. Despite its modest output, the lightweight construction allowed the car to reach practical urban speeds. A four-speed manual transmission was fitted, and as in many KR 200 models, reverse was achieved by reversing the direction of engine rotation rather than through a dedicated reverse gear.

The chassis consisted of a tubular steel frame supporting lightweight body panels. The three-wheel configuration, with two wheels at the front and one at the rear, balanced cost efficiency with acceptable stability for everyday use. Suspension was simple and designed for low-speed urban travel rather than high-performance driving.

Inside the Cabriolet Luxus, seating remained minimal but was often trimmed in higher-quality materials compared with base models. The cabin was compact and functional, with simple instrumentation and controls. The emphasis remained on economical mobility, but the Luxus variant aimed to provide a slightly more pleasant ownership experience.

The Messerschmitt KR 200 Cabriolet Luxus represents a refinement of the original Kabinenroller concept. While still firmly a microcar in scale and performance, it demonstrated that even the smallest vehicles could be offered with upgraded features to meet changing customer expectations.

Today, the KR 200 Cabriolet Luxus is considered a rare and charming collector’s item. Its combination of post-war ingenuity, lightweight engineering and subtle luxury touches makes it especially appealing to enthusiasts of microcars and unconventional automotive history.
