Description
The Austin A40 Farina Mk II, introduced in 1961, was an evolution of the original A40 Farina, designed by the famed Italian stylist Pininfarina. This updated version retained the compact, boxy styling of its predecessor but incorporated subtle refinements, including a revised grille, larger windows for improved visibility, and minor interior upgrades to enhance comfort and practicality.
A key improvement in the Mk II was the introduction of a larger 1,098cc A-Series engine, replacing the previous 948cc unit. This more powerful engine produced 48 horsepower, providing better acceleration and improved performance, particularly on longer journeys. The four-speed manual gearbox remained standard, offering smooth and reliable shifts.
One of the most notable features of the Mk II was the continued availability of the innovative two-box design, which allowed for a more spacious interior and improved luggage capacity. The Countryman variant, in particular, introduced a hatchback-style rear opening, making it one of the earliest practical small cars with this feature.
The Austin A40 Farina Mk II was well-received for its stylish Italian-influenced design, economical running costs, and practical nature. Though it was eventually replaced by larger and more modern models, it remains an important classic, recognized for its role in pioneering the hatchback concept in small British cars.
