Description

The Abarth Fiat 595 SS, also known as the “esse esse” (from the Italian pronunciation of “SS”), was an upgraded version of the Abarth 595 and represented the ultimate in performance for the classic Fiat 500 platform. Launched in the mid-1960s, the 595 SS was an enhanced, sportier variant of the 595, featuring additional tuning by Abarth that pushed its capabilities further, making it a favorite for both spirited street driving and amateur racing.

At the heart of the 595 SS was an upgraded version of the 595’s engine. Abarth took the Fiat 500’s original two-cylinder engine, expanded to 595 cc, and applied additional modifications, including a higher compression ratio, improved carburation, and an optimized exhaust system. These changes boosted the power output from the 595’s 27 horsepower to around 31 horsepower, a notable improvement given the car’s tiny stature and lightweight build. With this enhanced power, the 595 SS could reach speeds close to 80 mph (130 km/h), transforming the nimble city car into a surprisingly quick performer for its size.

Beyond engine upgrades, the 595 SS featured several distinct styling and performance tweaks that set it apart from the standard 595. It typically sported flared fenders to accommodate wider wheels and tires, enhancing grip and stability. Its lowered suspension improved handling, giving it a more aggressive stance and better performance through corners. The car also featured the iconic scorpion badges, Abarth emblems, and often carried red accents and striping, marking it as a special, high-performance model.

Inside, the 595 SS was outfitted with sportier seats and sometimes a sportier steering wheel, creating a more focused driving environment. Although still modest by modern standards, the 595 SS offered an exhilarating driving experience thanks to its light weight, punchy engine, and responsive handling. It became a favorite among racing enthusiasts and is highly valued by collectors today for its unique blend of charm, performance, and Italian flair. The Abarth Fiat 595 SS remains a timeless icon of Abarth’s early tuning prowess, embodying the spirit of small cars with big personalities.
