Description
The AC Cobra 427 S/C (Semi-Competition) Racing variant is one of the most legendary and sought-after models in the Cobra lineage, combining the ferocity of a racing car with the usability of a road-legal vehicle. Introduced in 1965, the 427 S/C was born from Carroll Shelby’s ambitious plan to create a racing version of the Cobra 427 to compete in international motorsports. While the full production of racing models was curtailed due to changes in FIA regulations, a limited number of these cars were converted into Semi-Competition models for street use, making them an instant classic.
The Cobra 427 S/C was powered by a monstrous 427 cubic inch (7.0-liter) Ford V8 engine, producing up to 485 horsepower. This immense power was delivered through a four-speed manual transmission, propelling the car from 0 to 60 mph in just over 3 seconds and allowing it to reach top speeds exceeding 165 mph. The S/C variant was essentially a detuned version of the full competition cars, retaining many of the racing enhancements while being slightly more accessible for road use.
Visually, the 427 S/C was nearly identical to its racing counterparts, featuring wider fenders, a side-exit exhaust system, and a more aggressive stance. The car’s lightweight aluminium body and minimalist design focused on performance and aerodynamics. Key racing features included a roll bar, larger brakes, and competition suspension, making it well-suited for both road and track driving.
Inside, the Cobra 427 S/C maintained a Spartan interior, with racing bucket seats, a simple dashboard with essential gauges, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. The emphasis was on reducing weight and maximizing driver engagement, offering a raw and visceral driving experience.
The limited production of the AC Cobra 427 S/C, with only about 31 units built, has made it one of the most valuable and iconic models in automotive history. Its combination of racing pedigree, incredible performance, and exclusivity has cemented its status as a legendary vehicle, cherished by collectors and enthusiasts around the world. The 427 S/C represents the pinnacle of the Cobra’s evolution, embodying the perfect blend of power, agility, and racing heritage.
