Description

The Alfa Romeo 1750 Spider was introduced in 1968 as part of the Series 1 “Osso di Seppia” (cuttlefish bone) and later Series 2 Spider models. It was an evolution of the original Duetto, offering increased power, improved refinement, and subtle styling changes. Designed by Pininfarina, the 1750 Spider retained the elegant, flowing lines of its predecessor while incorporating mechanical upgrades for enhanced performance and drivability.

At the heart of the 1750 Spider was a 1,779 cc twin-cam inline-four engine producing 118 horsepower. This engine provided stronger acceleration and a higher top speed of around 190 km/h (118 mph), making it a more capable and refined grand tourer. Fuel delivery was handled by twin carburetors in early models, while later versions introduced SPICA fuel injection for improved efficiency and emissions control. The car featured a five-speed manual transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, and a well-tuned suspension that offered a perfect balance between comfort and sporty handling.

The most noticeable design change came with the introduction of the Series 2 Spider in 1969, which replaced the original rounded tail with a more squared-off “Kammback” rear end for better aerodynamics. Other refinements included updated bumpers, new interior materials, and improved ergonomics. Despite these changes, the car retained its classic Italian styling, making it one of the most recognizable roadsters of its era.

The 1750 Spider was well received for its blend of performance, style, and everyday usability. It remained in production until 1972, when it was replaced by the 2000 Spider. Today, the 1750 Spider is a highly desirable classic, valued for its purity of design, engaging driving dynamics, and connection to Alfa Romeo’s rich sports car heritage.
