Description
The Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider, introduced in 1971, was the successor to the 1750 Spider and the flagship model of the Alfa Romeo Spider range. Designed by Pininfarina, it retained the elegant styling of its predecessors while featuring a larger and more powerful engine, along with various refinements to enhance comfort and performance.
Under the hood, the 2000 Spider was powered by a 1,962 cc twin-cam inline-four engine producing 131 horsepower. This increase in displacement and power resulted in improved acceleration and a top speed of approximately 195 km/h (121 mph). Depending on the market, the car was equipped with either twin carburetors or SPICA fuel injection for the U.S. models. A five-speed manual gearbox provided smooth and precise shifting, while four-wheel disc brakes ensured strong stopping power.
The 2000 Spider continued with the squared-off “Kammback” rear design introduced with the Series 2 Spider, offering improved aerodynamics and luggage space. Other distinguishing features included a new black grille with horizontal chrome slats, larger rear lights, and upgraded interior materials. The dashboard was revised with new instrumentation and an improved layout, enhancing the car’s usability.
Praised for its combination of performance, style, and driving enjoyment, the 2000 Spider remained in production until 1982, when it was succeeded by later iterations of the Alfa Romeo Spider. Today, it remains a highly sought-after classic, appreciated for its timeless Pininfarina design, lively driving dynamics, and status as one of Alfa Romeo’s most beloved open-top sports cars.
