Description
The Alfa Romeo 33 1.4 IE was a later variant of the Alfa Romeo 33, introduced in the early 1990s as part of the model’s evolution. It combined the practicality of the compact hatchback design with improved fuel efficiency and modernized engineering.
Under the hood, the 33 1.4 IE was powered by a 1,351 cc boxer-four engine with electronic fuel injection, producing around 90 horsepower. The use of fuel injection (hence the “IE” designation) improved fuel economy, emissions, and drivability compared to earlier carbureted models. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, providing smooth gear changes and engaging performance. With its low center of gravity and well-tuned suspension, the 33 1.4 IE retained Alfa Romeo’s renowned agility and sharp handling.
The design followed the sharper, more modern aesthetic of the updated Alfa Romeo 33 models, featuring revised bumpers, an improved front grille, and more aerodynamic bodywork. The interior was upgraded with better-quality materials, improved ergonomics, and a more refined dashboard layout.
As an entry-level variant in the 33 lineup, the 1.4 IE provided a balance between affordability, efficiency, and the driving pleasure expected from an Alfa Romeo. It remained in production until the mid-1990s when the 33 series was replaced by the Alfa Romeo 145 and 146. Today, the 33 1.4 IE is appreciated for its unique boxer engine sound, responsive handling, and status as one of Alfa Romeo’s last compact models with a flat-four engine.
