Description
The Alfa Romeo 33 1.5 was a key model in the Alfa Romeo 33 lineup, introduced in 1983 as a successor to the Alfasud. Designed as a practical yet sporty compact car, it retained Alfa Romeo’s signature driving dynamics while offering improved comfort and modern styling.
Powered by a 1,490 cc boxer-four engine, the 33 1.5 produced between 85 and 105 horsepower, depending on the version and market. The low center of gravity provided by the horizontally opposed engine contributed to excellent handling characteristics. The car was typically paired with a five-speed manual transmission, delivering smooth power delivery and an engaging driving experience. Front-wheel drive was standard, though later models also featured Alfa Romeo’s innovative all-wheel-drive system in the 33 1.5 4×4 variant.
The exterior design was sharper and more angular than the Alfasud, with clean lines and a distinctive wedge-shaped profile. Inside, the cabin offered improved ergonomics, better materials, and more modern instrumentation. Despite its compact dimensions, the 33 provided decent interior space, making it a practical choice for daily use.
Throughout its production, the 33 1.5 saw various updates in styling, technology, and performance. Later models featured fuel injection, revised bumpers, and aerodynamic improvements. The car remained in production until 1994, when it was replaced by the Alfa Romeo 145 and 146.
Today, the Alfa Romeo 33 1.5 is appreciated for its unique boxer engine sound, engaging driving feel, and connection to Alfa Romeo’s heritage of sporty yet practical cars. It remains a cult classic among enthusiasts who appreciate its character and spirited performance.
