Description
The Alfa Romeo 33 1.8 TD was the diesel-powered version of the Alfa 33, introduced in the late 1980s to offer better fuel efficiency while maintaining the brand’s signature driving characteristics. Unlike the more performance-focused petrol models, the 1.8 TD was aimed at buyers looking for economy and long-distance usability.
Powered by a 1.8-liter turbo diesel engine, it produced approximately 84 hp at 4,300 rpm and 148 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm. While not as sporty as the petrol variants, the turbocharged diesel engine provided decent mid-range performance and good fuel economy. It had a top speed of around 170 km/h and could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 13 seconds.
The 1.8 TD retained the classic Alfa Romeo 33 design, with the same compact hatchback body and aerodynamic styling. The diesel model was often identified by its different badging and slightly revised front grille to improve airflow for cooling. Inside, the cabin was similar to other 33 models, offering a driver-focused layout with comfortable seats and a simple yet stylish dashboard.
On the road, the 1.8 TD was praised for its fuel efficiency and reliability, making it a popular choice for those who needed a practical yet stylish vehicle. However, the extra weight of the diesel engine affected handling slightly compared to the lighter boxer-engined petrol models. Like other Alfa Romeos from this period, rust and electrical gremlins were common issues.
Today, the Alfa Romeo 33 1.8 TD is a rare find, as many diesel models were used extensively and not preserved like their petrol counterparts. Enthusiasts appreciate its uniqueness as one of the few diesel-powered Alfa Romeo hatchbacks ever produced.
