Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0

Category:

Description

The Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0 was introduced in 1978 as the top variant of the Alfa Romeo Spider lineup, replacing the previous 2000 Spider. It continued the legacy of the iconic Pininfarina-designed roadster while offering enhanced performance, improved refinement, and a more engaging driving experience.

At its heart was a 1,962 cc twin-cam inline-four engine producing around 128 horsepower. This powerplant provided lively acceleration and a top speed of approximately 190 km/h (118 mph), making it a well-balanced and enjoyable sports car. Depending on the market, the engine featured twin carburetors or SPICA fuel injection in U.S. models for better emissions control. A five-speed manual gearbox ensured smooth shifting, and four-wheel disc brakes offered strong stopping power.

The Spider 2.0 was available in multiple generations, beginning with the Series 2 “Kammback” model introduced in 1969, which featured a squared-off rear for improved aerodynamics. The Series 3, introduced in 1983, brought black rubber bumpers, minor interior upgrades, and Bosch electronic fuel injection. The final iteration, the Series 4 (1990–1993), refined the styling with body-colored bumpers, smoother lines, and a more modern interior while retaining the classic roadster appeal.

Praised for its combination of timeless design, responsive handling, and engaging performance, the Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0 remained in production until 1993, marking the end of a legendary sports car era. Today, it is a highly sought-after classic, appreciated by enthusiasts for its Italian charm, open-top driving pleasure, and mechanical simplicity.
