Description

The Alpine Renault A110 1600 S Rallye Group 4 was a competition-spec version of the legendary A110, developed specifically for rally racing in the early 1970s. Built on the lightweight fiberglass-bodied A110 platform, this model was extensively modified to meet Group 4 homologation requirements, enhancing its performance and durability for demanding rally stages.

At its heart was a 1,605 cc inline-four engine, producing around 138 to 155 horsepower, depending on tuning and configuration. Equipped with twin Weber carburetors and an improved exhaust system, the engine delivered exceptional power-to-weight performance. The car’s rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout provided superb handling characteristics, making it highly effective on twisty, technical rally routes. A five-speed manual gearbox allowed for precise gear changes, optimizing performance on different terrains.

To withstand the rigors of competition, the chassis was reinforced, and the suspension was upgraded with improved dampers and revised geometry. Lightweight alloy wheels and wider tires enhanced grip, while additional cooling modifications ensured reliability in long rally stages. The braking system was also upgraded, featuring ventilated discs for improved stopping power.

Visually, the Group 4 version featured rally-specific enhancements such as flared wheel arches to accommodate wider tires, auxiliary driving lights for night stages, and various sponsor decals from period competitions. The cockpit was stripped down for weight reduction, with racing bucket seats, a roll cage, and simplified instrumentation focused on performance.

The Alpine Renault A110 1600 S Rallye Group 4 played a crucial role in the success of Alpine in international rallying, contributing to the brand’s victory in the 1973 World Rally Championship. Its combination of agility, power, and lightweight design cemented its status as one of the most iconic rally cars of all time. Today, it remains a prized collector’s item, celebrated for its competition pedigree and unique driving experience.
