Description
The Alpine Renault A110 1600 S Rallye was a high-performance variant of the classic A110, designed to excel in rally competition during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Based on the lightweight and agile A110 chassis, this model featured a more powerful engine, improved suspension, and race-ready modifications that made it a dominant force in rally racing.
Powered by a 1,605 cc inline-four engine, the 1600 S Rallye produced between 125 and 138 horsepower, depending on the specification and tuning. This increase in power, combined with the car’s lightweight fiberglass body, resulted in an exceptional power-to-weight ratio. The rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel-drive layout provided excellent traction and sharp handling, making it especially effective on winding rally stages. A five-speed manual transmission ensured smooth and precise gear changes, optimizing performance across different terrains.
The chassis was reinforced for competition use, and the suspension was upgraded with improved dampers and springs to handle the rough conditions of rally racing. Wider tires and lightweight alloy wheels enhanced grip and stability, while an upgraded braking system provided better stopping power during high-speed stages.
Externally, the A110 1600 S Rallye retained the sleek and curvaceous design of the standard A110 but featured distinctive rally modifications such as additional driving lights for night racing, flared wheel arches, and sponsor decals. Inside, the cockpit was stripped down to reduce weight, featuring racing bucket seats, a roll cage, and simplified instrumentation focused on driver performance.
The Alpine Renault A110 1600 S Rallye became a legend in motorsport, playing a key role in Alpine’s rally success and helping secure the brand’s victory in the 1973 World Rally Championship. Its combination of lightweight design, precise handling, and competitive engineering made it one of the most iconic rally cars of its era, and today it remains highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
