Description
The Alpine Renault A110 1600 SI Rallye was a refined and more powerful version of the iconic A110, developed to enhance its performance in rally competition. Building on the success of its predecessors, this model retained the lightweight fiberglass body and rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout that made the A110 a dominant force in motorsport.
Equipped with a 1,605 cc inline-four engine featuring Bosch fuel injection, the 1600 SI produced approximately 138 horsepower. The switch to fuel injection improved throttle response, efficiency, and overall reliability, making it better suited for endurance rallying. Paired with a five-speed manual transmission, the powertrain delivered a lively and engaging driving experience, optimized for the high demands of rally competition.
The chassis was strengthened to handle the rigors of racing, and the suspension was tuned with improved shock absorbers and springs for enhanced stability on rough terrain. Wider wheels and tires provided better grip, while upgraded disc brakes ensured effective stopping power. The car’s exceptional handling and agility made it particularly well-suited for winding rally stages, where its low weight and balanced weight distribution gave it an edge over competitors.
Externally, the A110 1600 SI Rallye featured subtle yet functional modifications, including auxiliary rally lights, flared wheel arches to accommodate wider tires, and sponsor decals from period competitions. The interior remained focused on performance, with racing bucket seats, a roll cage, and simplified instrumentation to keep weight to a minimum.
The Alpine Renault A110 1600 SI Rallye continued the A110’s legacy of success in international rallying, benefiting from technical advancements that made it one of the most competitive rally cars of its time. Today, it remains a highly desirable collector’s item, celebrated for its combination of classic design, racing heritage, and exhilarating driving dynamics.
