Description

The Alpine Renault A110 1800 Group 4 was one of the most powerful and competitive variants of the legendary A110, built specifically for rally racing under the FIA’s Group 4 regulations. Developed in the early 1970s, this version was a direct evolution of the highly successful A110 1600, featuring a larger engine, enhanced performance, and reinforced components to dominate international rally stages.

At the heart of the A110 1800 Group 4 was a 1,796 cc inline-four engine, producing between 155 and 180 horsepower, depending on tuning and race specifications. Equipped with twin Weber carburetors or fuel injection in some versions, the engine delivered strong acceleration and impressive power for such a lightweight car. A five-speed manual gearbox allowed precise control, while the rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout provided exceptional agility and traction, making it especially effective on twisty rally routes.

To handle the increased power and the demands of rally racing, the suspension was upgraded with reinforced components, revised dampers, and stronger control arms. The braking system was also improved with larger ventilated disc brakes to provide better stopping power during high-speed rally stages. Wider wheels and tires increased grip, while flared wheel arches gave the car a more aggressive stance.

The exterior retained the signature curvaceous design of the A110 but featured key rally modifications, including additional driving lights for night stages, lightweight body panels, and aerodynamic enhancements. Inside, the cabin was stripped down to essentials, with racing bucket seats, a roll cage, and minimal instrumentation to reduce weight and maximize performance.

The Alpine Renault A110 1800 Group 4 played a crucial role in Alpine’s dominance in rally racing, particularly in the early 1970s when it helped secure the 1973 World Rally Championship title. Its combination of power, lightweight agility, and advanced engineering made it one of the most successful rally cars of its time. Today, it remains a prized collector’s item, celebrated for its motorsport heritage and thrilling driving dynamics.
