Description
The Austin 1100 Mk II was an updated version of the original Austin 1100, introduced in 1967 as part of the British Motor Corporation’s (BMC) ADO16 range. It retained the innovative front-wheel-drive layout and compact yet spacious design while incorporating several refinements to enhance performance, comfort, and style.
Externally, the Mk II featured a revised front grille design and minor trim updates, giving it a fresher appearance. Under the bonnet, it continued to be powered by the 1.1-liter A-series engine, but improvements in tuning and carburation slightly enhanced its efficiency and responsiveness. A key mechanical feature was its Hydrolastic suspension, which provided an exceptionally smooth ride for a small car and set it apart from many of its competitors.
Inside, the Austin 1100 Mk II benefited from upgraded upholstery, revised dashboard elements, and improved sound insulation for a quieter, more refined driving experience. It was available in both two-door and four-door saloon configurations, catering to different customer needs. The model was well-regarded for its practicality, excellent fuel economy, and nimble handling, making it a popular choice for urban drivers and small families.
As part of the larger ADO16 family, which included badge-engineered versions under brands like Morris, MG, and Riley, the Austin 1100 Mk II remained one of Britain’s best-selling cars throughout the late 1960s. It paved the way for the eventual transition to the Austin 1300 series, which brought further engine and trim enhancements to continue the model’s success.
