Description
The Austin 1100 Mk III was the final iteration of the popular ADO16 range, introduced in 1971. This version retained the familiar compact design and front-wheel-drive layout that had made the 1100 series a success but featured several refinements and updates to keep it competitive in the market.
Externally, the Mk III received a revised front grille, new badging, and minor trim updates. The overall shape remained largely unchanged, maintaining its classic, practical design. The car was available in both two-door and four-door saloon body styles, as well as an estate variant in some markets.
Inside, the Mk III saw improvements in comfort and trim quality. The dashboard was revised with a cleaner layout, and the seats were upgraded for better support. The spacious interior, a hallmark of the ADO16 series, continued to offer ample room for passengers despite the car’s compact dimensions.
Mechanically, the Austin 1100 Mk III retained the Hydrolastic suspension system, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride. The engine options remained largely the same, with a 1.1-liter A-series engine providing reliable and economical performance.
The Austin 1100 Mk III remained in production until the mid-1970s, when it was gradually phased out in favor of newer models like the Austin Allegro. Despite its eventual replacement, the ADO16 range, including the 1100 Mk III, remained one of the best-selling and most beloved small cars of its time.
