Description
The Austin 1300 Countryman Mk III was the estate version of the popular Austin 1300 Mk III, introduced in the early 1970s. It combined the practicality of a small family car with the added versatility of an extended rear cargo area. This model was part of the ADO16 range, which was among the best-selling compact cars of its time.
The exterior design featured the same front-end styling as the standard 1300 Mk III saloon but with an elongated roofline and extended rear section, providing increased luggage capacity. The Mk III updates included minor cosmetic changes such as a revised grille and improved trim details.
Inside, the Austin 1300 Countryman Mk III maintained a spacious cabin, offering comfortable seating for passengers with an upgraded dashboard and refined interior materials. The rear seats could be folded down to expand the cargo area, making it a practical choice for families and those needing extra storage space.
Under the hood, the car was powered by the reliable 1.3-liter A-series engine, delivering a balance of performance and efficiency. Like the saloon version, it retained the Hydrolastic suspension system, ensuring a smooth and stable ride, even when carrying heavy loads.
The Austin 1300 Countryman Mk III remained in production until the mid-1970s, after which it was succeeded by models like the Austin Allegro estate. Despite its eventual replacement, it remained a well-regarded vehicle for its practicality, comfort, and economy.
