Description
The Austin 1300 Mk II was an evolution of the original Austin 1300, introduced in 1968 as part of the British Motor Corporation’s (BMC) ADO16 range. It featured a larger 1.3-liter A-series engine, delivering improved performance and refinement compared to the earlier 1100 models. This second-generation version retained the Hydrolastic suspension system, which provided a smooth and comfortable ride, setting it apart from many rivals in its class.
Externally, the Mk II introduced minor styling changes, including a redesigned front grille, new badges, and slight updates to the trim. The body styles remained the same, with both two-door and four-door saloon variants available. Some versions also featured sportier trim levels, catering to drivers looking for a balance between practicality and performance.
Inside, the cabin received updates to the dashboard and upholstery, making it a more refined and comfortable place for passengers. The spacious interior remained one of the model’s key selling points, with clever packaging ensuring ample legroom and luggage space despite the compact dimensions.
The Austin 1300 Mk II continued to be a strong seller in the UK and other markets, benefiting from its reputation for reliability, efficient fuel consumption, and excellent handling. It remained in production until the early 1970s, when the ADO16 range eventually gave way to newer models like the Austin Allegro.
