Description

The Austin A35 Van was a light commercial vehicle produced by Austin from 1956 to 1968. It was the successor to the Austin A30 Van and featured several improvements, making it a reliable and practical choice for small businesses, tradespeople, and delivery services.

Powered by a 948cc A-Series four-cylinder engine, the A35 Van produced around 34 horsepower. This provided better performance compared to the earlier A30 Van, with a top speed of approximately 70 mph. The four-speed manual gearbox featured improved synchromesh, allowing for smoother gear changes. The van’s monocoque construction contributed to its durability, fuel efficiency, and easy handling, making it an economical option for commercial use.

The A35 Van retained the basic front-end styling of the A35 saloon but featured a larger and more functional cargo area. The rear section was boxy to maximize storage capacity, and access was provided through a single rear door. Despite its compact size, the van offered a surprising amount of load space, making it well-suited for small-scale transport and deliveries. Some versions were fitted with side windows and additional seating, making them more versatile for personal and business use.

The A35 Van gained popularity for its reliability, low running costs, and ease of maintenance. It was commonly used by tradespeople, shop owners, and even the British Post Office, which had a fleet of specially adapted A35 Vans for mail deliveries.

Today, the Austin A35 Van is a sought-after classic, appreciated for its nostalgic appeal and practicality. Surviving examples are often restored and displayed at vintage vehicle events, where they are admired for their charming design and historical significance.
