Description
The Austin A40 Countryman was a versatile estate version of the A40 Devon, produced by the Austin Motor Company from 1948 to 1956. Designed as a practical and spacious family car, it featured a wooden-framed rear body reminiscent of classic “woodie” wagons, giving it a distinctive appearance. Later models transitioned to an all-steel construction, improving durability and maintenance.
Powered by the same 1.2-liter, four-cylinder engine found in the Devon saloon, the A40 Countryman produced around 40 horsepower, offering dependable performance for everyday use. Its practical design included a split rear tailgate, with the lower section folding down and the upper section lifting up, making it easy to load cargo. The spacious interior provided ample seating for passengers while allowing for flexible storage configurations, making it ideal for families, tradespeople, and rural users who needed extra carrying capacity.
The A40 Countryman was well-received both in the UK and in export markets, particularly in Australia, where its practicality made it a popular choice. Its combination of reliability, economy, and versatility cemented its place as one of the early pioneers of the modern estate car. Today, surviving examples are valued by collectors who appreciate its charming design and historical significance.
