Description
The Austin A40 Dorset was a compact two-door saloon produced by the Austin Motor Company between 1947 and 1952, alongside its four-door counterpart, the A40 Devon. Designed as a practical yet stylish post-war vehicle, it featured a rounded, streamlined body with integrated front wings, a departure from the more upright designs of pre-war Austins. The Dorset shared many components with the Devon, including its 1.2-liter, four-cylinder engine, which produced around 40 horsepower, offering a balance of reliability and efficiency.
Despite having only two doors, the A40 Dorset provided a spacious interior with comfortable seating for four passengers. The dashboard layout was simple and functional, with easy-to-read instruments and durable materials designed to withstand everyday use. The car’s sturdy construction and smooth ride made it a popular choice among private buyers looking for a practical and economical vehicle.
Produced in smaller numbers than the Devon, the Dorset was eventually phased out in favor of the more versatile four-door model. However, its distinctive design and relative rarity have made it a sought-after classic among vintage car enthusiasts today. Many surviving examples are cherished by collectors who appreciate its role in Austin’s post-war resurgence and its charming period styling.
