Description
The Austin A40 Somerset was a compact saloon produced by the Austin Motor Company between 1952 and 1954, serving as the successor to the A40 Devon. Designed to offer a more modern and refined driving experience, it featured a curvier, more streamlined body with an imposing front grille, integrated headlights, and pronounced front and rear wheel arches that gave it a more substantial and stylish appearance.
Powered by a 1.2-liter, four-cylinder engine producing 42 horsepower, the A40 Somerset provided reliable performance for everyday driving. It was equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox, and its improved suspension system offered a smooth and comfortable ride. The interior was designed with practicality and comfort in mind, featuring a spacious cabin, well-padded seats, and a simple but functional dashboard layout.
In addition to the standard four-door saloon, a convertible version known as the A40 Somerset Coupé was also produced in limited numbers. The Somerset was well-received both in the UK and in export markets, particularly in Australia and North America, where it was valued for its durability and economy.
Though production ended in 1954, the A40 Somerset remains a cherished classic today, admired for its elegant post-war styling, mechanical simplicity, and nostalgic appeal. Many restored examples can still be seen at vintage car shows, representing an era when British family saloons combined charm with reliability.
