Description
The Austin A55 Cambridge Countryman Mk II was the estate version of the A55 Cambridge Mk II saloon, introduced in 1959. Designed to offer increased practicality and cargo space, it retained the stylish Pininfarina-inspired bodywork of the saloon while incorporating an extended rear section with a large tailgate for easy loading.
Powered by the reliable 1.5-liter B-Series engine producing around 51 horsepower, the Countryman provided decent performance for a family estate car of its time. It was equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox, with an optional overdrive for improved highway cruising. The suspension setup, featuring independent front suspension and a live rear axle, ensured a comfortable ride, even when carrying heavy loads.
The key feature of the Countryman was its spacious and versatile cargo area, making it ideal for families, businesses, and tradespeople. The split-folding rear seats allowed for even more storage capacity when needed. Inside, the dashboard and seating mirrored the saloon version, offering a straightforward and functional design.
Built until 1961 before being succeeded by the A60 Cambridge Countryman, the A55 Mk II Countryman remains a sought-after classic today, valued for its practicality, elegant styling, and role in Austin’s line of family estate cars.
