Description
The Austin A55 Cambridge Mk II LC was a long-wheelbase version of the standard A55 Mk II, designed primarily for the taxi and chauffeur-driven market. Introduced in 1959, it featured an extended body that provided additional rear passenger space, making it a practical choice for taxi operators and businesses requiring a comfortable and spacious vehicle.
Like the standard A55 Mk II, it was powered by the reliable 1.5-liter B-Series engine, delivering around 51 horsepower. The four-speed manual gearbox ensured smooth operation, while the suspension system provided a comfortable ride, even over rough roads. The extended wheelbase enhanced stability and ride quality, making it ideal for urban and long-distance travel.
The design retained the clean, Pininfarina-influenced styling of the standard model, but with an elongated rear section to accommodate the extra space. Inside, the LC version offered more legroom for rear passengers, often featuring an upgraded interior with additional upholstery options. Some models were fitted with a partition between the driver and passengers, further enhancing their suitability for hire car services.
Produced in relatively small numbers, the A55 Cambridge Mk II LC remains a rare and distinctive classic today, valued for its practicality, unique styling, and historical role in Britain’s taxi and private hire industry.
