Description
The Austin A55 Cambridge, introduced in 1957, was an evolution of the earlier A50 Cambridge, offering improved performance, styling, and practicality. Designed as a mid-sized family saloon, it was built on the same basic platform but featured a longer wheelbase, more refined styling, and a more powerful engine.
Under the bonnet, the A55 was equipped with an upgraded 1.5-liter B-Series engine, now producing 51 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. The improved power output provided slightly better acceleration and a top speed of around 77 mph. The suspension setup remained similar to its predecessor, ensuring a comfortable and stable ride.
Visually, the A55 had a sleeker, more modern design with subtle tail fins and a larger boot, reflecting the influence of American styling trends. The interior was also refined, offering better seating, improved dashboard design, and enhanced comfort features.
A significant update came in 1959 with the introduction of the A55 Cambridge Mk II, which featured a completely new monocoque body designed by Pininfarina. This version was more spacious, with a squared-off profile, larger windows, and a more contemporary look. The Mk II also offered an optional automatic transmission, making it one of the more advanced family cars of its time.
The A55 Cambridge remained in production until 1961 when it was succeeded by the A60 Cambridge. Today, it is appreciated by classic car enthusiasts for its stylish design, practicality, and role in Austin’s post-war success.
