Description
The Austin A60 Cambridge Diesel was a diesel-powered version of the A60 Cambridge, introduced primarily for the taxi and commercial markets. It featured the same body design as the standard A60 but was fitted with a more fuel-efficient diesel engine, making it a practical choice for long-distance driving and fleet operators.
Under the bonnet, the A60 Diesel was equipped with a 1.5-liter B-Series diesel engine, producing around 40 horsepower. While slower than the petrol version, with a top speed of roughly 65 mph, it offered significantly better fuel economy, making it an attractive option for cost-conscious drivers. A four-speed manual gearbox was standard, providing reliable performance for everyday use.
Externally, the A60 Diesel was nearly identical to its petrol counterpart, with the same Pininfarina-designed bodywork, chrome grille, and modest tail fins. The interior remained simple but functional, with durable materials suited to high-mileage applications.
Although never a high-performance vehicle, the A60 Cambridge Diesel found success in markets where fuel efficiency and reliability were more important than speed. It remained in production until 1969 and is now a rare classic, valued for its practicality and historical significance in Austin’s lineup.
